Thursday, September 7 - Dubuque

The day started much warmer, so we enjoyed a walk along Guttenberg's waterfront levee before heading south.  Lucky for us, we got to see first-hand, a tow going through Lock 10.

Once again, another very quiet day on the river; we're beginning to think this will be the norm.
Some of the sights from today's short cruise:

Manicured point on the river; someone has a very nice campsite!

Cassville's Car Ferry!  This ferry connects two National Scenic Byways; the Great River Road and the Iowa Great River Road.  The ferry served the early settlement of Cassville as far back as 1833 and it continues today.  It is the oldest operating ferry service in the state of Wisconsin.

I thought we'd have to wait 'til we reached the Caribbean for this!
  Arrgh, matey! 😉

Loving the warmer temps as we cruise today and enjoy the beautiful cliffs along the
Mississippi in Iowa.  These remind me a little of Wisconsin Dell's.

Most homes along the river south of LaCrosse look something like this:

However, occasionally you are wowed by some like these!

Once again, the river widens; this is above Lock 11 (Dubuque, Iowa).

We see "elephant graveyards" (for those Lion King fans) right before we head into Lock 11.

We are approximately one-fourth of the way to making our left turn on the Ohio River!  We started at mile marker 811.

Our home for the next two nights; Dubuque! 😃

As we approach the Dubuque City Marina in Ice Harbor, we are welcomed, yet again, by the American Duchess, and a very interesting gateway.

Once in the harbor, we see the 80 foot yacht, Moon River, which spent the summer in Stillwater.  In talking with the captain, he said that their destination is the Florida Keys; however that is all up in the air now because of Hurricane Irma! 😟

This is how far I got on the blog as of Thursday, 6:00 p.m.  Then this happened (hence why I'm finishing the blog on Friday morning!😉)

Decided to bike around the area, when we happened upon many people walking towards a common street in the "Mill" District.  It turns out Dubuque was having their first ever "Night Market".  It turned out to be a fun event despite the band losing power, brisket sandwich being made of tofu, and no wine, just bitter beer!🤣

We were told there was an after party at the Smokestack, a new venue right around the block from where we were, and that they had wine!😊🍷  Not only did they have great drinks to choose from, as well as a Cuban sandwich with real meat, they also had a fantastic jazz band which included a world-class piano player!  These guys could jam and were OUTSTANDING!

After a quick tour of the building, I was able to capture Dubuque's beautiful courthouse
from the rooftop!

What an unexpected fun evening!
