Wednesday, September 13 - Louisiana, Illinois

Sorry friends, I'm a couple of days behind due to bad signal;
it's obvious we were VERY far from anything!  Let me get you up-to-date! 😊

Since we were docked for the night at Keokuk Yacht Club, which is right above Lock 19, we were able to talk with the lock master to find out when we might be able to lock through (as once again, we noticed many towboats everywhere)!  We needed to wait for a tow to push out north, and then it would be our turn to lock south with a lightboat (a towboat with no barges).  That gave us just enough time to give the boat a quick rinse down!
As we make our way to Lock 19, we see beautiful homes on the edge of the bluffs.  We were told by the cab driver last night that Al Copone owned one of the homes and had a tunnel from the house to the river in case he needed to make any quick escapes!  Wonder if one of these might have been his home?

As we approach the lock, we see the Keokuk Power Plant to our left; such a MASSIVE structure!

The lightboat prepares to enter the lock before us.

As we follow the lightboat into the lock, here's what we just passed between!
(So glad I'm with Captain Dave!!!)

In this lock, ballards are used to hold our line.  We came across these a handful of times when we brought the boat back from Maryland.  I have a pocketknife all ready, in case I might need it!

It's the BIGGEST drop we've had since we've left Prescott!

As we leave, we see the lightboat exit the lock behind us.

A very calm day on the mighty Mississippi today; the water is like a glass lake!

Not many boats or people on the river once again, however we do see this gentleman getting ready for duck hunting; sooooo many decoys!  Is that you, Tony Guse?!πŸ˜‚

Lock and Dam 20 - we are now out of Iowa and in Missouri!

Quincy, Illinois, and another beautiful bridge.  Makes for a great place to park your barges!

Lock 21 maintenance crew was kind enough to make room for us to exit the lock!
Once again, great piloting by Captain Dave!

More beautiful homes (mansions) on the bluffs near Hannibal, Missouri.  The bluffs reappeared on the west side of the river once we got to Keokuk.

As we approach Hannibal's bridges, we notice a railroad bridge that ends
right into another train track . . .what?!!!  OH, look behind the train, there's a tunnel!😲

Hannibal, the home of Mark Twain!

As we head out of Lock 22, our final lock of the day, we see
more beautiful fall colors!

We anchor just south of Louisiana, Illinois.  I think we picked a great anchorage, as we had two eagles keeping a watchful eye over us!

Beautiful sunset to end a long day of cruising!

Captain Dave stats:  Since leaving Prescott, we have traveled 505 miles, and used 302 gallons of fuel.  Today we locked through four locks and the water temperature is now a balmy 70 degrees!
